8 Do's and Don'ts for Peach in the Bedroom

Yes, peach. It's time to give this long-maligned hue a second chance

Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected." I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

A designer recently told me that lots of people are afraid to use peach. A color must have done something truly terrifying for the masses to fear it so. What did peach ever do to us? Well, I'll tell you. In the 1980s, there were some truly hideous uses of peach — frilly bridesmaid dresses with 27 ruffles, unflattering lipsticks we wore based on our "seasons," and misguided Southwestern-inspired style. But don't count peach out. Using the right shade in the right way can create a beautiful and comforting bedroom.

1. Don't be scared. Interior designer Laura Lee and I were talking about this room, her daughter's, when she mentioned that lots of people are afraid of peach. Used with cream, gray and white, this yummy hue creates a dreamy bedroom for the teen. And I've noticed that the room has assuaged some peach phobia, as this photo has already popped up as one of the most popular bedrooms among Houzzers in 2017.

2. Do test your paint choice in different lights. Peach can be tricky. And as we learned in the 1980s, when used incorrectly, peach can overwhelm. Along the North Carolina coast, lots of bright sunlight amplifies the wall color. So a light peach, appropriately named Nearly Peach, was the right choice for a comforting wall color. The tangerine coverlet brings in something bolder in a smaller dose.

3. Don't shy away from modern. While the thought of peach tends to conjure up Steel Magnolias or Designing Women in our heads, it can go modern and contemporary, I promise. The graphic pattern on the wall hanging, the modern reading lamps and the typography on the posters place this room firmly in the modern camp. Also worth noting is this crisp paint job — wainscoting implied by the white paint on the lower portion of the walls, and peach extending all the way up past the moldings and across the ceiling.

4. Do let it soothe you. There's a strong contrast between the dark furniture and the vast ceiling in this bedroom, and warm peach walls serve as a calming mediator between the two.

5. Don't shy away from using other colors. The Dash & Albert rug is a choice that's easy to get behind, but the colorful bedding here was an unexpected move that paid off in this bedroom on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Perhaps it's the fact that the colors all look as if they could have been plucked from the garden.

6. Do think Old Hollywood. The palette of black, white, peach and gold is a nod to a bygone glam era in this bedroom. Interior designer Gabrielle Lazaros of Kelly McGuill Home chose a salmon peach for the walls. "It works well because it is not so pink but still gives off the feminine playfulness," she says.

7. Don't think about 1980s Southwestern style. Interpretations of Southwestern style have come a long way since all those yucky combinations of pastels and skulls that dominated in the '80s. This simple rug in charcoal gray and off-white hints at Native American motifs presented in a fresh graphic pattern.

8. Do consider peach for all ages. Warm golden tones and tangerine create a nurturing environment in this nursery.
